Hej, välkommen, welcome to SURR STHLM Issue #1
As an immigrant artist in Stockholm, I've sometimes found it hard to find the city's cultural pulse.
This project was born from my experience mapping Stockholm's cultural events since moving here in 2021. Like many others, I juggled countless newsletter subscriptions, Facebook and Eventbrite events, and scattered Instagram posts—watching meaningful moments slip through the cracks. In this decentralized events ecosystem, it's easy to feel out of the loop. But when I started intentionally documenting events info (I'm an ex-journalist, old habits die hard), I realized Stockholm's heartbeat is alive and well — if you know where to look.
In our individualistic world, the act of collecting can turn into hoarding or gatekeeping. That's why I created SURR: to embody more collective ways of being; to be an open door, a shared space.
The need for connection — connecting dots, connecting with each other — is clear to me. SURR aspires to be more than just a newsletter: it's a living archive and collective project illuminating the spaces, gatherings, and experiences that shape Stockholm's evolving cultural identity. In the process, I aim to spotlight and support artists, diverse communities, and grassroots initiatives in our city.
I'm thrilled you're here and I hope this marks the beginning of something valuable. Please chime in with event tips and feedback in the comments or on Instagram, @surrsthlm! And if you haven't already, make sure to subscribe to receive next month's newsletter.
Take care and see you around . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁
